Torrevieja Spain

Torrevieja is a coastal tourist town. Its history has always been around the Ocean and salt. There are two salt flats La Mata and Torrevieja and the exploitation of the salinas is as old as the Christian era. Today Torrevieja’s salt is still a very important industry; Torrevieja’s’ salt is exported to all over the world, more a 1 million tons a year.

Maritime activity is still a very important part of the economy, it is a fishing and commercial port. The centers of these activities are Real Club Nautico Torrevieja and Marina Internacional. At the end of the Paseo Marítimo are the wharves where the ships used to travel to Cuba with salt.

How to get there?

Nowadays these salt flats are surrounded by beautiful modern urbanizations and the tourist activity is an essential part of the community. Torrevieja is ideally located close to Alicante Airport and Murcia Airport, but you can also get here by train, bus or car. Torrevieja is located approximately 50 minutes from Alicante airport, about 30 minutes from San Javier Airport and around 1 hour from Alicante train station.

What to do?

Aside from just enjoying the placid beaches of Torrevieja, it is perfect place to take magnificent photos of the sunset. The Salinas are pink due the concentration of salt but also seaweed that contributes to the pink coloration; it makes it a very special, unique and mesmerizing landscape.

There are very interesting places to see, like the dock, which was remodeled in 2000, it is a very enjoyable walk. The authentic submarine, called the dolphin (S-61 Delfín”). The Mirador de la Torre del Moro was one of the old watchtowers of the city and of course you can miss the Museo de la Sal y el Mar and the Cathedral.

Where to eat?

There are very good choices of restaurants, some of them with excellent seafood and Mediterranean cuisine. Some of the restaurants are on the coast line, you can sit and enjoy of the view. Wine is excellent, because this region is well-known for the great quality of local wines.

Of course there are other choices, even an Mexican restaurant! Anything from an Irish Pub, to Pizza to International food, there is a choice for everyone and you will never get bored here.
